Anthem : "Indonesia Raya" (Great Indonesia).

Composed at a time when the colonial policy was "divide and rule," popularity of the song marked the beginning of Indonesian nationalist movements. The country's different ethnic, language, religious and cultural groups began using the song during political rallies to arouse national consciousness and develop a feeling of unity. Flag : Two equal horizontal bands of red and white, the Indonesian national flag is called "Sang Saka Merah Putih." The first flag appeared during Japanese occupation on the day Indonesia's independence was proclaimed, August 17, 1945. The style is similar to the flag of Monaco, which is shorter, and to the flag of Poland, in which the colors are reversed.

Form of government : A multiparty republic with two legislative houses. The president, who is chief of state and the head of government, is chosen by the 700-member People's Consultative Assembly (MPR). The assembly consists of the People's Representatives Council (DPR), which includes 462 members elected by popular vote and 38 members appointed by the military. An additional 135 regional representatives and 65 society group representatives are appointed members of the MPR.
